Savoir Beds has hand crafted the finest mattresses and box springs since 1905, when the famous No2 Bed was commissioned by The Savoy Hotel. Often known as "The Savoy Bed", this model is still in production today, using the same high quality craftsmanship and material that has made it a legend. Today Savoir Beds continue to manufacture in London at their "Bedworks", and also at a sister factory just outside Cardiff.
The beds continue to be bench made, with most models completed by a single craftsman using traditional upholstery skills and techniques, such as "star-lashing" hour glass upholstery springs, hand stitching rolls of loose, carded horse tail and slipping cases closed. These are skills which are no longer employed in the rest of the bed industry, and are rapidly being lost in the wider upholstery industry. However, Savoir has found that the use of the best skills and materials delivers an unparalleled result and the ability to give our clients a level of bespoke service which could not otherwise be obtained. Fortunately, clients are willing and able to pay the extra required to achieve Savoir’s quality, and the business is growing both in the UK and overseas. The result is that the workforce continues to grow, and the craft skills are being passed to the next generation of apprentice.
Savoir Beds are specified by top interior designers, from Nina Campbell and Colefax & Fowler through to Kelly Hoppen. Top hotels continue to use Savoir, and The Savoy will use the beds in their Royal Suite and top 20 riverside suites when they re-open in 2010 after a £100m refurbishment. However, the majority of beds are sold to private individuals through Savoir showrooms in Europe and the US.
