Nervous to meet Bill Amberg for the first time but am overwhelmed by how kind and friendly he is from day one. The first question he asks me is: "How can I help you?" I realise with surprise that this is the first time anyone in the last 13 years has ever asked me that question in respect to my business. This highlights the importance of this scheme for me and clarifies how rare it is to actually receive specific one to one help as a self employed designer/maker/artist; just him asking this question provokes quite an emotional response from me, extreme gratitude and appreciation, that for a period of time, I have someone to talk to about how things are going. He explains simply that to make a successful pitch or impression to a new client all one needs, initially, is a well composed, short document with a few images describing the essentials of what service of product I am offering along with testimonials from previous clients in conjunction with professional and detailed 'Terms and Conditions'. Once these two elements are in place you can then sit back, let go of the emotional components, and let the work speak for its self; he encourages me that I only need to mention 2 or 3 key projects in a clear manner rather than overload my clients with every single achievement I have ever made. He suggests that by writing everything down in formal documents it allows a separation between me and my business. I am sent away with a list of things to do, gather testimonials from as many of my previous clients as possible, begin composing these documents, start writing terms and conditions.
