Rauni creates silverware which is both sculptural and functional; pieces that are striking enough to stand alone, but are intended to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. She is inspired by the natural world, particularly the dramatic mountains and coastline of Snowdonia, where she lives and works. Rauni’s work aims to capture some of the beauty of nature, without directly imitating it.
Currently Rauni is experimenting with ‘Fold-forming’; folding sheet metal, forging it, then opening out the piece to reveal the 3-dimensional form, preferring to leave evidence of the process of making in the finished pieces, so that the eye can see they are formed by hammers and hands.
Rauni trained for 3 years in Finland at Lahti Design Institute, then graduated (BA Hons) from the School of Jewellery, Birmingham in 1996, and set up her studio in North Wales in 1997. Commissions have included three pieces in the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, Asprey, a 72 piece canteen of cutlery, and most recently a Royal Wedding gift.
Rauni Higson was mentored by Robert Ettinger in 2011
